Maggie Starcher on her new series, Views:
“The work in the series Views builds upon concepts of earlier works where the canvas is an intimate, window-like conduit into a surreal arrangement. The picture plane explores how the window further frames the scene and becomes another layer in the arrangement. The structure of the window contrasts the interior with the exterior, nature inside and out.
Elements of the paintings are portrayed in dream-like ambivalence: night and day, light and dark, color and form. The atmosphere of each work oftentimes evolves over the course of painting. The process involves a collection of observations, photographs, clippings, sketches, and imaginings, which are selected and collaged to inspire the composition.”
