Artists Katherine and Jonathan Cox will show new works on paper and sculpture, respectively in their DUET exhibition which opens Saturday, May 18th beginning with a talk by the artists at 5:30PM at The Art Store.  A reception to honor the artists will follow.  The DUET exhibition is the couple’s second exhibition together, and their first at The Art Store. The exhibition will continue through June 7.

Katherine Cox is an artist, teacher and the current Director of Education at the Huntington Museum of Art. She has served also as a drawing instructor at Marshall University.  Jonathan Cox is a sculptor working primarily in wood and stone. Since 1999, he has nurtured an increasingly growing sculpture program at Marshall University where he continues to serve as the Professor of Sculpture. Both artists recall natural forms, and incorporate wood and stone either as material or subject matter, though achieving different levels of intimacy and physical relationships with their audiences.

Schaul will discuss her latest body of work featuring interiors. Using a combination of color, texture and unusual perspectives, Schaul invites you into each scene of deceptively familiar domestic subjects. Schaul is interested in the viewer exploring every nook and cranny to decipher who might have inhabited these spaces.

“This show is populated by paintings of rooms detailing the underlying life of those that inhabit them. While the paintings are representational, I find in some cases, they lean towards the abstract. Using light, color, space and the placement of objects, I have composed the paintings to invite you in and make yourself at home.

A room has multiple narratives. Enter the paintings, explore every nook and cranny, and conclude for yourself who might inhabit them. What tales do the rooms have to tell? Maybe you will discover a sense of place.

Schaul’s latest body of work is an exploration of interiors infused with evidence of human presence and hints of the domestic. A combination of color, texture and unusual perspectives emerge as deceptively familiar subjects which through these artistic choices take on a particular psychological undertone and are often rife with symbolism.Her exhibition is available online here. Ellie Schaul is off to a busy Spring. In addition to the new exhibition at The Art Store, covered by the Charleston Gazette Mail, Schaul is being honored by the Charleston Community Music Association at the Third Annual Art Awards Gala on May 8. The Art Store is also pleased to announce that Schaul will be instructing a plein air workshop in June at Forren Soil in Charleston, WV. For workshop details, click here.
